Jefferson County Sheriff's Office Situational Awareness Poss Winter Weather and Extremely Cold Air

136e

As we approach this coming Christmas holiday weekend stay updated on the changing weather forecast. Extremely cold air is expected to build into East Tennessee Thursday night. This may lead to hazardous travel conditions on Friday and through the holiday weekend.

Rain will quickly change to snow Thursday night.

Low temperatures on Thursday night are expected to be in the teens, with highs on Friday in the 20s. Low temperatures Saturday morning are expected to be in the single digits, with afternoon highs in the 20s.

Winds will make temperatures feel even colder, with dangerous below-zero wind chills in the mountains Friday through Saturday.

Travel conditions are expected to become hazardous Thursday night, even if there is little snow accumulation as the extremely cold temperatures may cause rapid freezing of any moisture on roads. The persistent cold temperatures may keep icy conditions through the weekend.

So the time to prepare is NOW! As the amount of snow is undetermined at this time you have to take into consideration the fridge temperatures that are forecast. Start by checking alternative heating sources, as the risk of losing electricity increases, especially with possible snow in the forecast. Check your water source to make sure you minimize the risk of pipes freezing in the coming temperatures. We have to remember that most businesses will be closed due to the Christmas holidays which will delay your ability to make repairs. We will monitor all statements and briefings from the National Weather Service, Morristown and continue to update that information.
