Carson-Newman men's tennis (3-5) heads to Hickory, N.C., to compete against the Lenoir-Rhyne Bears (4-7) for their second conference matchup of the season on Wednesday, Mar. 8th.
The Eagles began conference play last Saturday when they played their home opener against Catawba College. Carson-Newman won the matchup 6-1, including winning the doubles point for just the fourth time this season. The Eagles are 3-1 when winning the doubles point so far this season.
Carson-Newman began the year with a win over #25-ranked Belmont Abbey. The Eagles lost four straight, including two ranked losses in #11 North Georgia and #13 Lander. The Eagles broke out of their four-game losing streak with a 6-1 win over Union (Ky.). They lost 5-2 against the undefeated Lee Flames before winning against Catawba last Saturday.
The Bears had a similar start to their season. They began with a 4-3 win over Barton before losing four straight. They broke out of their four-game losing streak with a 7-0 win over conference foe UVA-Wise. They lost 7-0 against Charleston before winning 4-3 over Lees-McRae. The Bears closed out Feb. with losses against Francis Marion and North Carolina A&T. They began Mar. with a 6-1 victory over Emory & Henry before losing to #12 Lander.
Marnix Van Dalen, Gjorgji Jankulovski, and Marc Janse each lead the team in wins with five. Van Dalen has collected four of his wins in the two spot. Jankulovski has split his time between the three and the four spots. Marc Janse has split time between the one and the two but holds a 3-2 record in the one for the Eagles.
Rintaro Oka and Marc Janse lead the Eagles in doubles victories with four. Ids Waterbolk and Jankulovski have won three straight to climb to 3-0 on the year. Marnix Van Dalen and Lars Hordijk are 2-0 on the season.
Carson-Newman's last matchup against Lenoir-Rhyne occurred last season on Mar. 26th. Carson-Newman was ranked 24th, while Lenoir-Rhyne was ranked 30th. The Bears won the game 5-2 despite wins from Jankulovski and Waterbolk.
