Rachel Peden was named the South Atlantic Conference Varsity Gems Women's Swimmer of the Week for her performance during the eighth week of the 2022-23 swim season.
Peden is a senior for the Eagles from Boiling Springs, S.C. and competed with Carson-Newman against Emory & Henry on Saturday, Dec. 10. The Eagles placed first in every event throughout the meet in both men's and women's events. The final score favored the Eagles 327-74.
The women contributed 165 points to the overall team score, and 10 different women's swimmers placed first in at least one event. Among those first-place finishers was Peden who took gold in the women's 1000-yard freestyle event with a time of 10:59.31. Peden was the only swimmer who completed the race in under 11 minutes, and she finished 14 seconds ahead of her second-place competition.
"We are trying to have fun with it and really focus on the details," women's swimmer Rachel Peden said.
Peden and the rest of the Eagles will race again Jan. 19 in Knoxville, Tenn. against the University of Tennessee.
