U.S. Congressman Chuck Fleischmann, who represents Tennessee’s 3rd district, used his social media account on October 1, 2025, to address the ongoing government shutdown and place responsibility on Democratic lawmakers.
In a post at 16:24 UTC, Fleischmann stated, “My @HouseAppropsGOP colleagues & I led the passage of a non-partisan CR to keep our government open so bipartisan FY26 budget talks could continue. Instead, Democrats have chosen to block the non-partisan CR & shut down our government. America deserves better from Democrats.”
Later that day at 17:00 UTC, he added, “Every day this Democrat Shutdown continues is another day that our troops aren’t paid, average Americans are thrown into turmoil, and our country is weakened. It’s time for Democrats and Chuck Schumer to stop their political games and do what is right for America.”
In another tweet posted at the same time, Fleischmann said, “Nearly two weeks ago, @HouseGOP passed a clean, non-partisan CR to keep our government open. We did our job to avoid this harmful Democrat Shutdown. It takes 60 votes to pass the CR in the Senate. We only need 5 Democrats to do what is right & vote to reopen our government.”
Fleischmann has served in Congress since 2011, succeeding Zach Wamp. He was born in New York City in 1962 and currently resides in Chattanooga. Fleischmann holds degrees from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and the University of Tennessee.
A continuing resolution (CR) is a legislative measure used by Congress to fund government agencies temporarily when formal appropriations bills have not been signed into law. In recent years, disagreements between parties over budget priorities have led to several government shutdowns.
The U.S. Senate requires a minimum of 60 votes to pass most legislation, including continuing resolutions, which means bipartisan support is typically necessary for passage.
